Ralf Schwieger is a young perfumer whose architectural writing and desire to create extraordinary products have seduced Frédéric Malle.
Of his work, Ralf says: "Perfumery is a halfbreed of Art and industry. My curiosity led me to it. I was then curious about science (I'm a trained chemist), but I was mostly in search of an artistic medium. Since then, I have to put my nose into everything. I need to touch and smell to understand".
He speaks about his work as a half cerebral and half intuitive construction game. A game that starts with a long intellectual phase followed by a long sensual research, almost a tactile one: "I love combining raw materials. In my imagination first, thinking about a central note, which I tune with another, to soften it, to reinforce it, or to create a contrast. This is how I obtain an effect of surprise or a feeling of tranquility. I personally prefer surprises, and the outmost one often comes when smelling the result of one of my trials".
