Bond No. 9 - Andy Warhol's Union Square
A cooperation by Bond No. 9 & The Andy Warhol Foundation, New York
"My absolute favourite fragrance? That is the smell of spring, the first herald of spring in New York," Andy Warhol once said. It may have been such a mood in the 60s that started his series of hyper- stylized, hyper-fantasy-ful floral motifs. In the 70s he took up this theme and elements of style once again and developed a portfolio of flowers using silkscreen printing in supernatural vibrant colours – for the first time in one of his two first studios in Union Square.
Warhol's Union Square
The second fragrance in the BOND NO 9 Warhol collection was named after the artist’s two studios in Union Square, where he and his crew worked from 1968 to 1984. Here in the middle of downtown New York he started his legendary portraits of the rich and famous, designed the famous Mao Paintings and the portfolio of flower prints. The connecting point between Broadway and Park Avenue South (between 14th and 17th Street) was a generous park that has always been a meeting place for major events. In the 20s it was the venue for trade union demonstrations, in the 70s it hosted a flower market. As Warhol in 1968 opened his first studio (33 Union Square West), the area was run down and neglected. He remained there, even after an attempted street murder, until 1974 and then moved to the other side of the park into his new, second studio at 860 Broadway. He remained here with his Warhol Factory until 1984. In all of those years at Union Square misery and glamour repeatedly collided with each other. During those years in the Warhol Factory it was a constant coming and going with icons of the time - Mick Jagger, Bianca Jagger, Brigitte Bardot, Ira von Fürstenberg , Yves Saint Laurent, Truman Capote, to name but a few.
Union Square The Perfume
The scent - a tempting, green-floral perfume, one moment cool, then once again warm, comes in one of Warhol’s symbolic and legendary Flower Series inspired flacons. Pop-Art meets Perfume - a new level of sophistication! While most floral scents are generally not regarded as cool, Union Square breaks with this tradition and is very ambisexuell, spraying a daring blend of coolness and Sweetness. The foreground is full of lilies of the valley interwoven accents of blue freesia, gold amber and sensual musk. Fresh green vegetable chords and aromatic birch wood nuances surprisingly transform this fragrance into pure energy. Everything blends, merges together and forms a unique unity.
Union Square - the flacon
The flacon shows Warhol's pop art design in an entirely new medium - on the surface of an artfully crafted glass flacon! The 2-dimensional, almost psychedelic colour effect of striking flower motives is extremely powerful. The colour Code chosen is a fuchsia-red and yellow to blue-coloured grass detail. This almost unnatural presentation has an enormously striking, near-to psychedelic effect that melts into a new artistic composition - just like the perfume itself.
